If I remember correctly, in the 1800s, when theatre troupes started bringing their traveling shows to the newly settled West, they faced similar problems. Although, there was a fascinating angle: sometimes the rowdy, drunken cowhands and miners would get so engaged in the story, they would either forget or fail to realize that the damsel wasn't actually in distress, and would leap onstage to attack the villain. I don't know if that's true, but I hope it is, because it's a great image. (Though, not for the actor playing the villain, I suppose.)shobizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01471300080193371502noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34128825.post-90143565392672084702009-08-05T16:36:58.973-07:002009-08-05T16:36:58.973-07:00Bob, I can handle the drunkenness and urinating, b...Bob, I can handle the drunkenness and urinating, but I draw the line at puns in the theater (Will Shakespeare excepted).

Ms. Smartypants, because I work for a children's theater, I've adjusted to a different standard of theater behavior. We're used to the wiggling, whispering and squirming, and we even seat people after the show has started. Heck, we even have urination problems. Still, we do try to inculcate some sense that the experience of attending a live performance is special and different -- that part of the magic is that you're in a room with other people being respectful of other audience members and the folks on stage. It's a tough balance.MightyToyCannonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14523823158706838012noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34128825.post-58373006834105932582009-08-05T15:12:13.079-07:002009-08-05T15:12:13.079-07:00It's a lousy Yob, but somebody's gotta do ...It's a lousy Yob, but somebody's gotta do it.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13765688465211717384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34128825.post-31672926049410118372009-08-05T15:09:00.470-07:002009-08-05T15:09:00.470-07:00Sigh. If we want new people to try theater for the first time, we have to look at it from an outsider's perspective. Does it feel precious and pretentious and uptight? Or does having to show up on time, sit quietly during a performance, and keep your feet off the chair in front of you actually create a big part of the theater experience?princess smartypantshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17986823201253755103noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34128825.post-70618556227043769812009-08-05T15:03:52.497-07:002009-08-05T15:03:52.497-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.princess smartypantshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17986823201253755103noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34128825.post-12903513091031706322009-08-05T09:51:57.876-07:002009-08-05T09:51:57.876-07:00Ms. Glitz, I think you mean "The Dolores.&quo...Ms. Glitz, I think you mean "The Dolores."culturejockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14263465772349376129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34128825.post-36998900901303090912009-08-05T08:27:45.236-07:002009-08-05T08:27:45.236-07:00Dear Ms. Glitz, was that while you were working fo...Dear Ms. Glitz, was that while you were working for ... oh never mind, I don't want to know.MightyToyCannonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14523823158706838012noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34128825.post-59035534515407604692009-08-05T08:14:15.644-07:002009-08-05T08:14:15.644-07:00Brilliant.
