Great Port City

This afternoon, in front of about 50 guests assembled on the second floor of the Central Library, Commissioner Maria Rojo de Steffey, library director Vailey Oehlke, my boss Eloise and others unveiled "Great Port City," a giant (6' x 9') ceramic tile painting by George Johanson.

This piece was partly donated by the artist, and party paid for by a gift from Books and Dorothy Cofield, and now is officially part of the Multnomah County public art collection. As the organization that manages the County collection, RACC helped facilitate the donation, site the artwork (that is, decide where to put it), and ultimately hang it at the library (which reportedly took a good 5 hours to do, this being a pretty heavy piece from a very particular artist.)

Looks nice, especially I think as a compliment to Larry Kirkland's very fine "Garden Stairs" that lead up to it. (If you click on the image for a larger view, you can see the tiles and more detail.)
